3 Tips for Managing Back-to-School Uncertainty

Back to school can be an emotionally challenging time even under ordinary circumstances.  With all the uncertainty with how back to school will look, in the past month I have seen both parents and kids who needed help managing the stress of back to school. Chiropractic First helps both children and adults better manage stress, make transitions easier and increase focus.

Whether it is the grief of sending your child off to college, your child’s anxiety about the first day at all day kindergarten, the anxiety of online learning, or worry over childcare if school is not in person, here are some things that can help.

1. Anxiety and new experiences can overwhelm our nervous systems. One of the best ways to address this on a physical level is to “reset” our neurology. Cross crawl exercises are a great way to do this. When you or your child are feeling anxious, stressed or overwhelmed, touch your left arm to your right knee. Then touch your right arm to your left knee. Repeat that 10 times, or until you feel more calm.

2. Recognize the polarity. More than one thing can be true. Watching your kids grow up and having them leave the house can bring a lot of grief and a sense of loss. And also you are so proud of them and excited for these new stages!  Worrying about the virus, but also getting back into the classroom.   Both of those things can be true at the same time. Take a few minutes to take a few deep breaths. Notice both the grief and the joy. Allow both to be present.

3. Take time for hugs and cuddles. Human touch is vital for our physical as well as emotional health. Being touched lowers cardiovascular stress, it improves immune function and releases calming hormones. This is true no matter what your age, or the age of your child. Teenagers need hugs too (don’t let them fool you)! While chiropractic can be a major source of touch for some people, if you have friends or family who you safely can hug, don’t discount the importance of taking time to touch and be touched.

Cuddles are great no matter how old you are
