Chiropractic
for Prenatal / Neonatal and Infant Care
|
Prenatal
chiropractic care can help ease both mother and baby through
the birth process. During
pregnancy, a woman's body adapts with the weight of her baby.
As the fetus develops, the pelvis spreads and the ligaments
loosen. The low back curves to compensate for the extra abdominal
load while the midback curves with the weight of the breasts.
Chiropractic care is very important
during this time. It helps to ensure full nerve function to
both mother and baby. Making sure the pelvis is in the proper
position can help avoid a breach situation.
All
births are traumatic. Spinal cord and brain stem injuries
often occur during the process of birth, but they frequently
escape recognition. Respiratory depression in the neonate
is a cardinal sign of such injury. Forceps deliveries, cesarean
sections, and the use of the drug Pitocin (which makes birth
contractions much stronger) put the most stress on the baby.

Delivering
a child by cesarean section is
like pulling a boot out of the mud. As much as 90 lbs. of pressure
can be exerted on the baby's neck and shoulders. The two upper neck
bones and tissue can be twisted. This puts pressure on the ear canal,
jaw and mouth and throat area, which directly affects the baby's
ability to nurse. As the infant is pushed, pulled and compressed
during the birth process, trauma to the nerves can result. This
trauma is now being linked with a host of childhood ailments
from ear infections to attention deficit disorder (ADD) to sudden
infant death syndrome (SIDS). Autopsies of SIDS victims have revealed
small hemorrhages around the spinal cord which would indicate trauma.
According to Abraham Towbin, a neuropathologist
at Boston Children's hospital, seven out of eight SIDS victims suffered
cervical spine injuries which resulted in the neuropathophysiology
that caused the death of the infant. (Towbin,
A., "Latent Spinal Cord and Brain Stem Injury in Newborn Infants,"
Develop. Med. Child Neurol, 1969; 11:54-68)

A
child's physiology can change almost immediately with adjustments
because children don't have the emotional attachments and
muscle memories of adults.
Growing
evidence suggests that aches and pains that haunt us in our
adult years can be traced back to untreated childhood injuries.
Until the age of 9, the spinal column
is not completely solidified into bone - it is a sort of cartilage
that protects the central nervous system.
Childhood twists, falls and bumps can affect how the immature
spine is formed. Athletic children run a greater risk of a
subluxation (an incomplete or partial dislocation that can
put pressure on a nerve, which interferes with its ability
to operate properly) than do their less active counterparts.
Children should be checked once a month
preventatively especially during the growth period, but specifically
after a fall, accident or sports injury. At right,
